On Friday, July 26th, at Comic-Con, we got some exciting and surprising news about the Dexter universe. As we were all expecting, "Dexter: The Original Sin" was announced. This will be a prequel set after high school where young Dexter will be portrayed by Patrick Gibson, and Michael C. Hall will be the inner voice for young Dexter, which I thought was awesome. But believe it or not, this is not the news that I'm here to talk about.
Towards the end of the panel for Dexter, we got news that shocked pretty much everyone who’s ever watched Dexter. It was revealed that another spinoff is in the works and will air next summer called "Dexter: Resurrection." Now, I don't know about you, but from my knowledge, resurrection means coming back to life. The most surprising news about this new spinoff is that it's a sequel taking place directly after "New Blood."
At the start, Walt wanted to secure his family's future. But in season one, his motivation shifted to fear, just like Krazy-8, the first major enemy he faced. Krazy-8 was a drug dealer and informant who was about to kill Walt when Walt killed him first out of fear.
In the transition from season one to two, Walt's main enemy was Tuco Salamanca, a power-hungry drug dealer. Walt wanted to be on top, just like Tuco. Walt and Jesse planned to kill Tuco, but Hank killed Tuco first. After Tuco's death, Walt wanted to control the drug trade himself, using Jesse as his pawn.
When Walt met Gus Fring, a smart and greedy drug kingpin, he saw someone who was never satisfied with what he had. Gus ran a successful drug empire and several chicken restaurants as a front. Walt, who already had enough money for his family, became driven by the same greed. He wanted more power, and the only way to get it was to eliminate Gus.
Just to recap, at the end of "New Blood," we all saw Harrison, Dexter's son, shoot Dexter and supposedly kill him. However, with this new spinoff announced, that scene is now very confusing to look back on. Luckily for us, Michael C. Hall did an interview with Variety and cleared things up. When asked about Dexter's death at the end of "New Blood," he had a very interesting response. He said, "I don't know what I'm authorized to say, but what I will say is it was very cold that day, it was very cold," basically alluding to Dexter living.
Now you might be asking yourself, how is that saying that Dexter survived? Well, if they want to say that Dexter survived, the only logical explanation they could have is that Harrison shot Dexter and missed his heart, and the temperature outside was so cold that it helped stop the bleeding. Therefore, Dexter survived.
Personally, I am here for anything Dexter, so I am excited. But I know a lot of people are going to be surprised by this, so let me explain why I think they are bringing Dexter back to life and resurrecting the series. Ever since TikTok was released, it has done wonders for the world of television. For example, "Breaking Bad" was always a really good show and highly regarded by critics and fans of the show, but the fan base more than doubled when the show started trending on TikTok. The show was created in 2008, and most of the new fan base probably wasn't even born yet in 2008, just to put it in perspective. The same thing happened with "The Walking Dead." It was a dying show, and with the power of social media, they managed to revive a huge portion of the original fan base.
With Dexter, a similar thing has happened. Editors managed to create 4K content of the most popular clips with slowed and reverbed songs in the background, captivating people's attention for 30 seconds. When those videos get tens of millions of views, people are bound to watch the full show. On top of that, in June, it was added to Netflix. The popularity of Dexter has grown significantly within the past year, and now it's going to take over again.
Personally, I do not blame them. I would do the same thing. It seems like Michael C. Hall loves playing Dexter and is very attached to the character. He is also only 53 years old. He could play the role of Dexter for another 20 years, so why not continue the story? After all, tonight's the night, and it will happen again and again. It has to happen.
